(Dubai Health & News)
The First Levant Breast Cancer Summit with over 100 oncologists coming from Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and Iraq was recently held in Amman, Jordan and organized by Novartis Oncology.

The summit highlighted such topics as Adjuvant Breast Cancer therapy, reducing recurrence from the start; optimizing the use of Aromatase Inhibitors; and Neoadjuvant therapy in breast cancer cases.

Speaking on behalf of Novartis and the summit itself, Mr. Osama Breiwish, Business Unit Head at Novartis Oncology, said: "This topic is of exceedingly high importance, not only in the region, but throughout the world. It is about time we joined the discussion of what can and should be done to at least help curb the effects of breast cancer. Novartis has been working diligently to bring forward such solutions."

Presentations on two cancer medications developed by Novartis Oncology aimed at tackling the effects of breast cancer, Femara (letrozole) and Zometa (zoledronic acid) were also discussed during the summit.

Femara is a leading oral treatment for women with hormone-related breast cancer. Clinical data has confirmed that Femara does provides benefit to women after surgery (adjuvant) as well as reduces the risk of breast cancer returning. Zometa is an intravenous bisphosphonate medication to treat patients with cancer complications such as bone cancer.

Mr. Osama Breiwish added: "Through the use of such important medications as Femara and Zometa, we are able to tip the balance in our favor and achieve great progress in treating breast cancer."

The summit was also chaired by five highly esteemed doctors in the field of oncology, including Dr. Samir Al-Kayed, Head of the National Cancer Registry at the Ministry of Health in Jordan; Dr. Nader Qasem, oncology/hematology specialist from Beirut; Dr. Khdayer Sabih, oncology/hematology expert in the Uranium Medical Research Center in Baghdad; Dr. Sami Al-Khatib, Chief Arab oncology/hematology expert; and Dr. Fawaz Deirawan, oncology/hematology expert from Tishreen Syrian Hospital.
