McKesson Imaging set to introduce PACS system in
the UAE market

(ArabMedicare.com) Since the last decade, premier IT solutions
provider for the healthcare industry, McKesson Imaging, has driven a
competitive edge to worldwide healthcare enterprises through its
award-winning Picture Archiving Communications Solutions (PACS) system.
The implementation of the PACS system in different countries has ushered
in a completely new concept in film-less diagnostic review, a radical
step forward from traditional forms of computerized radiology that was
in use earlier.
Speaking to ArabMedicare.com on the sidelines of the Global Health Care
Expansion Congress 2006, being held at the J.W.Marriott hotel in Dubai
(December 4-5), Mr. Dana Driver, Vice President, Sales Programs,
McKesson Imaging, said that his company was currently in talks (through
it affiliate in Dubai) with the Department of Health and Medical
Services (DOHMS), Ministry of Health (MOH) and the authorities at the
upcoming Dubai Healthcare City to introduce the PACS system in the UAE.
The PACS includes digital viewing monitors and electronic archives so
that data can be stored and disseminated electronically.
"What with the rapid expansion of healthcare services in Dubai, the
introduction of the film-less diagnostic review could be both
cost-effective and rewarding for all patients while cutting down on
medical errors on the part of the radiologist or the referring
physician," he added. "Yes, we are looking at a stronger
presence in this region and hope that very soon, the PACS system will be
implemented in the UAE."
"Wherever the PACS has been introduced, revenues have increased,
costs have come down and the work flow has increased with technology
proving to be major differentiator. So far there have been more than
1,000 installations of PACS in the US, Canada and Europe with a large
degree of success," Mr. Driver said. One of the biggest advantages
of this system is that patients as well as physicians do not need to
waste time to get the prints, instead they can simply view the images
online and can get more than 200 images to choose from. Moreover digital
technology can be manipulated (contrast and brightness can be adjusted)
to provide clearer pictures resulting in more accurate diagnosis,"
Mr. Driver explained.
In 2007, McKesson Imaging is set to add a new feather to its cap by
launching the 256-bit CT that will provide more than 10,000 images all
at once. Currently the advanced McKesson CT offers 2,000 images using a
64-bit processor. Within the PACS system, patient seeking prints are
generally offered more than 200 images on a CD using technology that is
both non-invasive as well efficient.
At the recently concluded conference of the Radiology Society of North
America (RSNA) which had got together more than 70,000 physicians and
clinicians from the world over, Mr. Driver said he had met with doctors
as well as management representatives of the different government and
private hospitals in the UAE and was confident that McKesson Imaging
products, once introduced, would make a vital difference to diagnostics
in the region.
