(ArabMedicare.com) Leading US supplier of healthcare information
technology solutions Cerner Corporation is foraying into the UAE market,
working closely with five hospitals under the Abu Dhabi Health Authority
to link up medical records electronically. They are also looking at the
possibility of cooperating with the Department of Health and Medical
Services (DOHMS) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) to implement powerful
yet intuitive IT solutions that will ensure greater patient safety.
Michael J. Beller, Chief Medical Officer and Vice President, Cerner West CinC, in an exclusive
interview with ArabMedicare.com on the sidelines of the Global Health
Care Expansion Congress 2006 being held at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Dubai
(December 4-5) said: "We are looking at eliminating the use of the
paper and the pen from hospitals replacing them with electronic medical
records resulting in electronically linked communities."
"There is a lot of interest in the Middle East market about our
solutions and this conference has provided us with an ideal platform to
reach out to decision-makers and medical professionals in this
region," Mr. Beller explained.
As many as 98,000 people die each year due to medical errors and their
numbers can be reduced significantly by providing solutions that bridge
the gap between the healthcare service providers and users. Mr. Beller
focused on the speed electronic prescribing process, devised by Cerner,
that makes IT solutions used by the doctors, hospitals and drugstores
compatible, thus reducing the scope of medical errors. Studies have
shown that approximately 33 per cent of the drug errors including 30 per
cent of the deaths worldwide are due to poor labeling and packaging,
which can be effectively countered through online prescription and
dispensation of medicines.
"Medicine continues to rely on handwritten communications and this
must be remedied," said Mr. Beller. Cerner is currently engaged in
transcending barriers within and across medical institutions and
colleges to create communities of patients and healthcare professionals
who are electronically linked, well-informed and potentially safe.
Mr. Beller also shed light on the Cerner Computerized Physician Order
Entry (CPOE) solution that has been specifically designed for healthcare
providers so that they are not tied to a paper chart to provide care and
evaluate results. By adopting the easy-to-use solution, healthcare
providers can cut steps from order entry and eliminate time-intensive,
duplicative processes. Physicians, nurses, pharmacists and ancillary
caregivers can communicate, receive and take note of patient care
decisions more efficiently and effectively. They also automate workflow
by allowing clinicians to evaluate patient status, consider evidence,
enter and check orders, communicate effectively and document actions.
Cerner offers a single solution with a broad clinical, financial and
administrative impact. The leading provider of IT healthcare solutions
also has a large number of implementations on current platforms. And
through a design process that includes clients and clinicians, the
company supports healthcare providers and enables them to provide better
care, reduce risk and manage their activities quickly and easily. The
Cerner CPOE system saves time, while improving patient safety, enhance
communication and care team coordination while preventing medication
errors and wrong usage of drugs.
