(Dubai Health & News) "Plastic surgery aimed at making people look more beautiful could end up leaving them scarred, unless they do their research properly," warned Dr. Sanjay Parashar, Visiting Plastic Surgeon at Jebel Ali Hospital.

Cosmetic enhancement is a thriving industry in the UAE as it is globally, and it is not just glamour models, aging starlets, Pamela Anderson and Michael Jackson who use cosmetic surgeons. Increasing numbers of ordinary people are also concerned about their body image.

Widely considered a fad among only women, cosmetic surgery is now appealing to modern-day men, with treatments including hair transplants, liposuction, neck and facelifts and eyelid surgeries. "Nowadays a greater percentage of men visit my clinic for all kinds of aesthetic surgeries," Parashar said.

Plastic surgery involves aesthetic and reconstructive surgery aimed at reshaping, repair, restoration or improvement of lost, injured, defective or distorted parts of the body - and it usually involves molding or transfer of living tissue.

"Many people confuse plastic surgery with cosmetic enhancements only, such as breast enlargements and buttock lifts, but it is also used for people with congenital deformities or disfigurements caused by injury," added Parashar.

According to Jebel Ali Hospital, the number of people opting for cosmetic surgery in Dubai has increased. This excludes non-surgical procedures like Botox injections & Fillers, which also carry their own health risks. Parashar regularly turns away patients and asks others to consult a psychologist before proceeding with treatment.

He said: "Some people visit the clinic with unreasonable demands, they want to look like a particular actress or model - which is not possible, and trying to do so may end up in a disaster. It is important not to take a casual attitude with surgery - cosmetic surgery is not as straightforward as visiting the hairdresser!"

Medical advancements have made some cosmetic treatments quicker and safer. For some procedures surgeons apply local anaesthesia with IV Sedation or 'twilight anaesthesia', which relax patients instead of rendering them unconscious.

"Face and neck lifts, breast augmentation and liposuction can be performed as day care procedures where patients are up and about the same day and can return to work in few days time, but the recovery times vary and some treatments demand significantly more recuperation," said Parashar.

He said: "While cosmetic surgery is becoming more and more accessible, it is still vital that people approach only the most qualified and highly trained doctors and surgeons. Various societies and Associations of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons have produced a series of guidelines to ensure people contemplating cosmetic surgery consult the right specialists."
