(ArabMedicare.com) The Department of Health and Medical Services
(DOHMS) is in talks with international experts to establish the first
Gamma Knife Surgery Center that will usher in a new era of non-invasive
treatment of tumor and brain abnormalities, Dr. Mohammed Saada, Head of
Neurology, (DOHMS) told
ArabMedicare.com recently. While similar centers have already been set
up in Saudi Arabia and Jordan, Dubai is looking forward to join the
bandwagon.
Discussions regarding the introduction of Gamma Knife technology in the
UAE will take place at the Second International Emirates Neurology
Congress and the First Emirates Epilepsy Chapter Symposium, scheduled to
be held at the Habtoor Grand Resorts and Spa, Dubai, from March 6-8, Dr.
Saada, who is also the President of the Emirates Neurology Society,
highlighted in an exclusive interview with ArabMedicare.com.
The Neuro-ME 2007 which is being supported by the DOHMS, Emirates
Medical Association and held under the auspices of the World Federation
of Neurology, will bring together internationally-reputed neurologists
from the world over as they share the latest advances, technology,
treatment and best practices for Epilepsy, Dementia, Alzheimer's and
Parkinson's Diseases. The three-day conference will not only provide
evidence-based practice but also highlight the latest research works and
share ideas at the academic and clinical levels.
More than 43 speakers from a large number of countries like US, UK,
Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, Turkey, Tunisia etc will share their
experiences about the treatment of neurological disorders. The last day
of the conference will be dedicated to Epilepsy and its health
consequences. Epilepsy is a widespread genetic disorder in the Middle
East and makes up for at least 20 per cent of admissions to government
hospitals in Dubai, Dr. Saada explained.
"We are inspired by the huge success of the event last year. This
year too, program of the congress is very attractive with debates, key
talks and research articles that will be presented in the various fields
of Neurology. It will include hot topics on cerebro-vascular diseases,
multiple sclerosis, movement, muscle and nerve disorders, neuro-radiology,
neuropsychiatry, neuro-rehabilitation, headache, pain, CNS infections,
pediatric and adult epilepsy and surgical neurology. In Neuro-Me 2007,
we will admit new topics to our scientific program -- neuro-genetics,
EEG, Neuro-ophthalmology, Neuro-otology, Alzheimer's disease, dystonia,
stem cell and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis," Dr. Saada said.
Satellite symposia on the recent developments in the fields of the
pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries will be held along side
with the congress. An exhibition running parallel to the event will
provide an excellent platform to interact with representatives of
pharmaceutical companies dedicated to Neurology.
Among the significant international speakers of the conference are Dr.
Perrine Plouin from France who will focus on the 'diagnosis of neonatal
seizures and the role of EEG', Dr. Anil Agarwal from India who will
discuss "Trigeminal Neuralgia" and Dr. Jagjit Chopra who will
highlight on multiple sclerosis and Neurocysticercosis.
Among UAE speakers who will demonstrate the need for clinical reasoning
are Dr. Loai Saadah who will speak on "Genetics of Drug Resistance
in Epilepsy", Dr. Hanan Al Shakankiry who will shed light on
"Augmented Epileptiform Discharges in Sleep" and Dr. Mohammed
Saada who will share his experiences on Neurobrucellosis.
