New ingredient in milk formulae to protect
short-sightedness in children

(ArabMedicare.com) A new ingredient in popular milk formulae
available in the Middle East might be crucial in preventing
short-sightedness in children.
Pioneers in infant and childhood milk formulae, Wyeth Nutrition has
included that vital ingredient, lutein, in its Progress Milk product, as
part of its commitment to children's health in the Middle East, Mr.
Robert Holz, Director, Nutrition Division, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, MENA
announced on the sidelines of the Mother Baby and Child Show 2006
recently
held at the Zabeel Hall, Dubai International Convention Centre from
December 14-16.
Lutein helps to protect the eyes by preferentially filtering harmful
blue light that is the highest energy form of visible light. "While
this light-filtering capacity of the eye increases with age, it is
fairly low among children. Subsequently blue light can cause damage to
the eye by initiating photo-oxidation reactions. It is here that lutein
plays an important role, by quenching the oxygen-free radicals generated
by photo-oxidation," Mr. Holz explained.
"Progress Gold, which already contains comprehensive range of
nutrients, vitamins and minerals for healthy, physical and mental
development in children between 1-3 years, will now contain lutein,
which studies have indicated to be an important component for protecting
children's eyes and supporting optimal eye health."
Mr. Holz also noted that while leafy vegetables such as spinach, peas
and broccoli are good sources of lutein, children are often reluctant to
take them. Mothers by offering Progress Gold milk can ensure that their
children are getting enough supply of lutein.
Wyeth Nutrition, which has products in the field of women's health care,
cardiovascular disease, the central nervous system, inflammation,
hemophilia, vaccines and nutrition, is one of the prime sponsors of the
ongoing Mother, Baby and Child Show 2006.
Wyeth Gold chose the occasion to launch its unique community service
programme in the Middle East - the Wyeth Gold Careline -offering
pregnant or new mothers practical tips on childcare, nutrition, safety
etc.
Wyeth Nutrition has established a toll free call centre, staffed by
nutritionists, who are mothers themselves, and have a deep understanding
of development and nutrition. On dialing the toll free number 80099384,
mothers can confide their problems and receive sound advice on issues
pertaining to different phases of their pregnancy or development
milestones of their children.
All women are free to register with the Wyeth Gold Careline right from
the day they find themselves pregnant till the time their children are
three years old. All members receive booklets, newsletters and other
surprise gifts. Mothers can also e-mail their queries at the Wyeth Gold
Careline web site (www.aAftalWyeth.com) and will receive all the
information that they are looking for.
At the Mother Baby and Child Show 2006, Wyeth Nutrition sponsored the
Progress Zone, which has proved to be very popular with children and
mothers alike. Here children are enjoying a variety of activities
including soft-toys, play-learn games and getting themselves
photographed with the new and loveable Progress Gold mascot. Mothers are
also utilizing the opportunity to register with the newly-launched Wyeth
Gold Careline to get updated about the different facets of childcare.
